March 22, 2012

CISE education and Virginia Beach City Public School teacher, Sharon Bowers, was formally invited by the Bernard Harris Foundation to reside on a panel regarding STEM Education. The panel discussion was part of a larger event, which took place in Washington, D.C. on March 21, 2012. The event, part of a larger national series, was intended to raise awareness of opportunities in STEM education, elevate its prominence in education policy, and address critical areas of our education system that promulgate alarming drop out rates and low proficiency in STEM subjects.

Bowers was nominated to the panel due to her affiliation with the Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy. ExxonMobil co-sponsored the event.

The National Education Forum addressed the following issues in STEM education:

-       The need for full service schools

-       The need for motivation through role models and technology

-       The need for empowerment and involvement

-       The need for reform in pre-service education and ongoing professional development

-       The need to invest in tomorrow’s leaders…and their teachers
